The Board of Fire Trustees is pleased to announce that the Greater Victoria Labour Relations Association, Salt Spring Island Fire Protection District, and the Salt Spring Island Firefighters Association IAFF Local 4467 have signed a new Collective Agreement that began on January 1st, 2017 and ends December 31st, 2022. The Collective Agreement will be formally released as a public document at the April board meeting.
After the award from the Arbitrator, the Department went to immediate work transitioning to the new 24/7 staffing model. The Board of Trustees is proud to announce that the Ganges Fire Hall is now staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. SSIFR is showing improved response times in what has already been a very busy start to the year.
There has been excellent collaboration between the District and the Union to ensure a smooth transition to the new model. The Department continues to build upon this new model, improving operations and emergency services to our Island.
The collective agreement requires that the Department hire two new career Firefighters over the next two years. In the interim, the Department is utilizing our valued volunteer Paid-on-Call members to backfill these vacant positions providing them with work experience and exponentially increasing the level of their training.
